Polytechnic to University Paths

By: Regina, in Category: University

In Singapore, students who have completed their studies at a polytechnic may have several options to progress to a university. Here are some of the common paths and how to prepare for them:

  1. Local University Admission: Polytechnic graduates can apply for admission to local universities through the Direct Entry Scheme to Polytechnic Graduates (DPA). This scheme allows polytechnic graduates to gain admission to a local university based on their polytechnic results, without having to take the GCE A-Level exams. Students can prepare for this path by achieving good grades and building a strong portfolio of co-curricular activities.

  2. Local Private University Admission: Another option for polytechnic graduates is to apply for admission to local private universities such as SIM University or the Singapore Institute of Technology. These universities offer degree programs in various fields and may have different entry requirements. Students can prepare for this path by researching the requirements of the universities they are interested in and working towards achieving the necessary grades and qualifications.

  3. Overseas University Admission: Polytechnic graduates can also apply for admission to overseas universities. This path may require taking the GCE A-Level exams or other international standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT. Students can prepare for this path by researching universities and their admission requirements, preparing for standardized tests, and building a strong application portfolio.

  4. SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree: This is a relatively new pathway for polytechnic graduates who want to pursue a degree while gaining work experience. Students can apply for the SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree program, which is a partnership between the polytechnics and local universities. Students can prepare for this path by researching the available programs and finding a suitable employer to sponsor their studies.

To prepare for any of these pathways, students can focus on achieving good grades, building a strong portfolio of co-curricular activities, and gaining work experience or internships in their field of interest. They can also seek guidance from their polytechnic career advisors and attend university fairs and information sessions to learn more about their options.
